Cloth Diaper Tip, It's all about the Inserts!

Posted by Julie on 1/8/2013 to Cloth Diaper How-To
Cloth diapering can be easy, but don't underestimate the importance of inserts, extra inserts, doublers, boosters and prefolds for absorbency.

Do you really need all these different types of inserts? Why do they even exist? Read this post to find out what the deal is!

What's the DEAL with all these fancy inserts?

Truthfully, if they're absorbent, then they kind of all serve the same purpose. They could all be called "that absorbent thingy," but depending on the style of diaper you may not be "inserting" it into anything, it may just be intended for use on top of something like a "doubler" or the name could simply be brand specific. ex. Mom's Super Duper Diaper Soaker Pad!

Don't get overwhelmed. The fact of the matter is that just because a diaper comes with one insert or soaker, doesn't mean that's all you need. Your baby may be a heavy wetter and that diaper might leak. Try "doubling" up on inserts from your stash. Be-warned though, you may end up with diapers that need to be used but not enough inserts.

Do you need to buy more?

Indeed, it's always a good idea to have extra "absorbent thingys" to use in your diapers. This way you won't be left short and you can feel free to test new combinations in order to find that perfect solution.

I think it's important to note, if it's absorbent then you can use it with almost ANY diaper. Don't be scared to use a Flip Stay Dry Insert as an extra insert for your Fuzzi Bunz. Try tri-folding a prefold around a micro insert and stuffing that into your Diaper Rite Pocket Diaper. Experiment and have fun!

So, do you have various brands and styles of inserts that you use or do you use the inserts your diapers came with and that's it?

I use different inserts in different diapers . My diapers mostly came with microfiber. I also have a lot of hemp doublers and inserts that I use with the microfiber at night. I would love to try a zorb insert. The minky inserts didn't work for us at all.

In addition to the inserts included with our diapers, I'm planning to use the bamboo prefolds I've purchased as inserts after the newborn stage.
