Washing bumGenius! Cloth Diapers is quite easy.
The bumGenius! 4.0 One-Size Cloth Diaper, as well as the other styles of bumGenius! diapers, are single-use cloth diapers; after they have been soiled they require a complete wash and dry cycle before they can be used on your baby again.
Thankfully, caring for your baby's bumGenius! diapers is as simple as using them!
Washing bumGenius! One-Size Cloth Diapers
bumGenius! recommends two wash cycles with an extra rinse cycle to ensure a complete cleansing away of any lingering detergent. The bumGenius! Cloth Diaper Detergent was designed specifically for bumGenius! diapers, but can be used with any of your family's laundry; it does not contain optical brighteners, dyes, fragrances, or phosphates.
If you don't choose to use the bumGenius! Cloth Diaper Detergent, make sure your cloth diaper washing is done with a eco-friendly detergent free of the ingredients listed above; this protects your diapers from premature leaks, elastic failure and decreased absorption from build-up or fiber damage. A few tried and true cloth diaper detergents to select from are Country Save Powdered Cloth Diaper Detergent, GroVia's Tiny Bubbles Cloth Diaper Detergent, or Rockin' Green Cloth Diaper Detergent.
While we know it is recommended across several forums and cloth diaper communities… it is absolutely unnecessary to add baking soda and/or vinegar to your bumGenius! wash; these products could cause problems with your diapers.
ALWAYS AVOID FABRIC SOFTENERS - including detergents with built-in fabric softeners. Fabric softeners can lead to a residue build-up atop the diaper fabric, disallowing absorption when baby wets.
Manufacturer Suggested Cloth Diaper Washing Routine
- Wash once in cold water.
- Wash once in warm or hot water with no more than 1/4 cup of bumGenius! Cloth Diaper Detergent. bumGenius! gives an option to occasionally use 1/4 cup of bleach in this cycle. If you chose to do this, we recommend you do it minimally as bleach breaks down fibers in fabrics as it cleanses and disinfects.
- Add an extra rinse to remove all traces of detergent.
- Tumble dry on medium setting or hang to dry.
Do you think you have detergent build-up?
If your bumGenius! diapers are repelling water, or you notice a strong, pungent odor after baby wets in them, you may have detergent build-up. Alleviating a build-up of detergent requires approximately one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent (preferably Liquid Dawn) in the washing machine. Rinse thoroughly - until you see that all suds are gone - and then dry your bumGenius! diapers in the dryer on medium heat.
Easily store your soiled bumGenius! between diaper loads.
After your baby's diaper changes, but before placing your soiled bumGenius! 4.0 One-Size Cloth Diaper into a waterproof diaper tote, spray it with the bumGenius! Odor Remover! This all-natural blend of water and vegetative microbes comes in an 8 oz. bottle and is sprayed atop the soiled area of a cloth diaper or diaper cover.
Once your cloth diaper has been sprayed, avoid messes by rolling the bumGenius! up, just like you might a disposable diaper, and securing it closed by fastening the tabs around it.
Using the appropriate cloth diaper detergent and then rinsing and storing your soiled cloth diapers in this way keeps messes contained nice and neat and ready for the diaper laundry when you get home.
