She thinks cloth diapering is for hippies.
My mother-in-law and I have a very special relationship that involves colossal amounts of passive aggression (on her end) and patience (on my end). My husband is an only child from rural NY and I come from a huge family of eccentric French-Cajuns from New Orleans. You do the math.
We were openly harassed about having babies for about 3 years before we had our first son and I think that my MIL was just waiting to show me the ropes! When they would visit during my pregnancy, she would buy gallons of nursery water (Im still not sure exactly what that is), perfumed baby wipes, disposable diapers and strongly perfumed ointments and powders. Of course I was thankful, but I delicately explained that I preferred a more natural approach to baby care....without so many chemicals and fragrances (oh my, the fragrances). The cloth diaper announcement fell like a bomb because she could not understand why I would make things harder on myself. I was very offended by this at first and then it hit me.
My MIL had her baby in the era where women were being liberated by convenience and freedom of a disposable and portable lifestyle. Disposable diapers-baby formula-car seats! These were things that gave women freedom that they had never had before. Ironically, women in my generation were having kids later in life and turning back time. Of course, cloth diapers had come a long way since the 60s and 70s! Once I showed her the pin-less pocket diapers and soft fleece liners she understood...a little. In this day and age, natural lifestyle choices give us the option to do better for our babies than ever before. Cloth diapering doesn't have to be as convenient as using disposables because convenience isn't a novelty anymore (lets face it, we all do a TON of laundry anyway so who's really counting loads anyway).
My MIL and I will always have to work a little harder to be on the same page but for now we have come to a truce in the diapering arena.
