This thought came to me when I was dressing my daughter in her onesie that says, ďDoes this diaper make my but look big?Ē
Urban dictionary.com defines a crunchy mama as:ďMother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods.
ĒI have always considered my self to be frugal. My husband and I have a small homestead where we grow our own vegetables, raise our meat and dairy. Babywearing came as a means of survival. I cannot allow my daughter to scream while I tend chores! Co- sleeping was also accidental- mommy was tired and usually I fall asleep while nursing. Herbal remedies that we use came about because of a homeschool lesson where we were looking at local wild plants. Trying to identify a few, I quite literally stumbled upon the medicinal uses, thanks Google!
While, I cannot say that my discipline is gentle (Iím still working on the yelling) and I believe I would die without meat, I do support any momís birth choices Ė but the only homebirth Iím likely to have would again be accidental also. The cloth diapers however were a very conscience choice that I made.
I started my cloth diaper adventure in a quest to save money and what started as another one of my many money saving adventures has quickly become a passion and dare I say an addiction? What I thought would be a burden of work (mind you Iím not afraid of elbow grease) has quickly become such a joy!My heart swells every time I see those colorful pieces of cotton, micro fiber and PUL flapping in the breeze. What security I have that I will never run out of diapers and have to run to town, No small feat when you live where I do, we plan our town trips carefully!
Even in emergencies my Flip diapers can be hand washed and hung inside to dry in an hour or less! I know that I am not adding expense to my familyís monthly budget. Disclaimer: that of course does not count when I see that cute cover or diaper on sale that I just must add to my stash **smile** . I also have the added benefit of keeping my baby dry while not adding to the landfills ~ wait is that my crunchy showing? So in my quest to be frugal I have stumbled into being crunchy too. If thatís the case just pass the granola. Maybe I should use my savings to buy some Birkenstocks, but on sale of course!
