Who knew that becoming a cloth diaper mama would become a hobby? After researching the many types of cloth diapers, I decided to purchase one BumGenius 4.0. I thought the pocket diaper would be the best transition from disposables into the world of cloth. While I have always felt guilty about filling the landfills, I didn't switch due to the "green" factor.
Instead, I actually switched because I wanted something more convenient than disposables. Yes, I just said "more convenient" about cloth diapers.
After trying the solo BumGenius a few times, and having to wash it by hand because I didn't want to do a whole load with one diaper, I decided to increase my stash. While once again searching online I found the BumGenius Flip diaper. This was the perfect solution to my "ease of use" requirement, because it meant NO STUFFING. So I ordered three day packs. One with the organic inserts to use as a doubler at night, and two of the StayDry packs.
Why I think cloth is easier:
I will have two children in diapers at the same time and this way I don't have to worry about having the right size for each kid. I can't imagine trying to keep track of which size I was running low on.
This makes the diaper bag MUCH easier with two in diapers. I just throw in a few liners and one cover. It doesn't matter which child needs to be changed, they both use the same stuff.
These aren't your mother's cloth diapers. My biggest fear with the transition was the poop. I use the flushable liners and flushable wipes. Now I just clean her up and flush it down. This means, no more stinky trash can.
Things you need to know when new to cloth diapers:
You probably need a different detergent. Most detergents have at least one thing that is bad for cloth diapers.
Wash Routine: It seems that everyone has their own way that works for them. I soak and prewash in cold. Add two scoops of BumGenius detergent and wash in hot with an extra rinse. Then I do one more rinse.
Don't use diaper cream with cloth diapers unless you use a liner. I also got the Grovia rash cream because it is easier than worrying about my husband not getting other cream on the diapers.
So, thanks to BumGenius I am building my cloth diaper stash and you can too!
Laura Carr used to be a teacher, but is now a stay at home mom. In a few months she will have two under two, which is why she transitioned to cloth diapers.
