Another concern among modern parents is what is going in the baby food being fed to their children. To solve this dilemma, many parents choose to make their own baby food. What may appear to be a difficult task at first is made quite simple with the addition of a few key tools for baby feeding. The first item that is needed is a baby food mill. A simple hand crank mill is all that is necessary. Whatever is going into the mill will need to cook until it is quite soft, so it will not require any type of super-powered blending to get it to a consistency that baby’s palate can swallow. If it were to require this, then the food is not soft enough to begin with. Some nutritious first foods can be blended raw, preserving the nutritional content as Mother Nature grows intended! Items like organic ripe avocados and organic ripe bananas are excellent choices. Other choices like sweet potatoes, squash, carrots or meats will need to be cooked soft and ground to a puree in the baby food mill.

Once the food is cooked and pureed, there is often is enough prepared for multiple meals. As it is always best to select organic food items, tossing the leftovers would be wasteful both to the wallet and to the environment. Small, serving-size containers with lids are the way to go for the remaining quantities of prepared baby food. This allows for storage of fresh homemade baby food in the freezer in ready-to-eat portions. Always make sure the plastic is BPA-free and selecting stackable containers will reduce the space needed! By following these simple steps, baby feeding at home is sure to be a milestone both parent and child will enjoy!
