Summer and Cloth Diaper Use
Warm
weather has arrived, and with it
comes the opportunity to wear tank tops, shorts, and flip flops!
For babies, it means sun hats,
sunscreen, and little or no clothing.

I remember how my mom used to strip the
baby of the family down to their diaper when we were little. I
remember my littlest siblings riding in the shopping cart wearing
nothing but their little, white diaper and how I was so jealous
because they were definitely more comfortable than any of us!
Now that I’m the mom, I’m excited
at a chance to let my daughter run around in a cloth diaper and her
birthday suit—especially since her cloth diapers are so cute—and I’m
excited to give her the freedom of near nakedness!
So which diapers will work the best? I
guess that depends on what you are looking for in your diaper!
Pretty Diapers
Of course, if your baby is going to
show off their little bum, you might feel that your prettiest colors
and prints are the most suitable for summer. Whether they sport
nothing but a diaper or they wear it with a shirt or a dress, that
colorful fluffy bum is sure to turn heads! The new bumGenius artist
series or Thirsties prints would both be a great showy option for
this summer
Go Coverless
If you’re going to take the heat as
an opportunity to skip the clothes and show off the diaper, you might
as well go coverless with a fitted diaper or even a flat or a
prefold. Going coverless has lots of perks. First of all, you get
to show off the pretty diapers that are normally covered. Second of
all, it gives you an opportunity to get to know your baby’s pee and
poop schedule. But the my favorite reason to go coverless in the
summer is that it’s nice and cool on your baby’s bum because it
allows the diaper to breathe even when wet. I prefer Happy Heinys
Sherpa Fitteds and Indian unbleached prefolds in addition to my
handmade fitted diapers.
Wool
Wool is a step up from going coverless.
It is still cool and breathable, but without risking wet sheets or
clothing. Besides, it’s completely natural and gentle against your
baby’s skin. Sustainablebabyishsloomb has some great covers as
well as Kissaluvs and Imse Vimse. Of course, you could also ask
someone to handknit you a wool cover as well.
Swim diapers
The summer is a great great
opportunity to use your swim diapers! They’re cute and bright and
colorful and the perfect diapering solution for a cooling swim! My
favorite swim diaper is made my Kushies. I also have a Bummis swim
diaper that works great. Of course Rump-a-rooz, Happy Heinys, and
Apple Cheeks all suggest using their pockets without inserts as swim
diapers as well.
So, parents, go ahead and break out the
sundresses and the sandals, the shades and the swimsuits but don’t
forget to deck your baby’s bum with some summery cloth! It’s
still the best option for that gentle bum, no matter the season!
