Fitnesss? There's an app for that!
Keeping in step with all things New Years resolutions I thought it would be fun to look at a few fitness apps you can use on your smartphone. You know, with most things these days, there's an app for that! I polled a few of my pals on what their favorite fitness app
was and I also did a handy search to help you swim through the many choices out there to find your app for...wait for it...that!
Runkeeper- With claims boasting to be the Facebook of the health and fitness community, Runkeeper is a highly popular app amongst those who run. The features of this app are perfect for runners, walkers, cyclists, (okay you get the point) whether you're a beginner or an old pro. I like it RunKeeper because they make you set a goal on your first login like finishing a 5k and when you link it up to your Facebook you can find your friends on there. I also love how it sends you an email when you set a new personal record. I don't have a smartphone and I'm on it! Find me and Ill be your running friend!
MyFitnessPal- Hands down, if you ask most people who have been trying to lose weight, they will tell you that you have to check out MyFitnessPal. The great thing about MyFitnessPal is that you set up weight loss goals. Then it will set up your caloric intake goal according to how much weight you want to lose. Say you want to lose ten pounds in the next six weeks MFP will do the math for you. There's also a scanner so you can scan your food in with your phone and it'll count the calories for you. It doesn't get any easier than that folks! It also figures in your activity level and I love that since I like to see the extra calories I get by working out!
Walk Watch (on iTunes) and MapMyWalk- As you can probably guess these apps are designed with walkers in mind. Walk Watch has GPS set up so you can do your walking and make certain you're getting the workout that you need. It'll tell you when to pick up the pace. MapMyWalk (also available is MapMyRun, Hike, Tri, Fitness, Cycling okay you get the picture) is similar to Walk Watch and is compatible with most smartphones. You can also use it on your computer; remember I still live in the Stone Age and don't own a smartphone.
Runtastic- My cousin is an avid runner, yes, and the marathon kind of runner. Anyways, he likes to use Runtastic for his app for that training. Runtastic has a free app version for iPhones, Androids, Blackberries, Windows Phone and bada. The free app has distance/time/speed tracking, calories burned, charts so you can track your progress and share your workouts with your friends via social media. There are a lot of really cool features that I didn't even list and if you want to be really hardcore try the Pro version (for a fee). Here's a list of their features.
Rock My Run- I love the concept of this app, especially as I arrived late for spinning class this morning so I couldn't get in. In my opinion there is nothing worse than having to workout music-less. I had to do it this morning and it was terrible. With Rock My Run you have access to DJ mixes specifically geared to pump you up and get you going.
DietBet- I was just introduced to this site recently as a friend of mine took the plunge and joined a group as an incentive to get started on her journey to health. The way it works is you pay a certain amount of money to join a DietBet group; you take a picture of your starting weight on the scale and then track your progress. If you lose the desired amount of weight by the end of the group challenge then you get your money back, if you lose the most, well, you receive more than the amount you first put in. Money and challenges are definitely motivating and a great way to keep you on track.
I hope these helped you. I know I learned a lot mostly that I need, okay I want a smartphone! Heres to your health and wellness journey!
Do you already use any of these? Something else? Let us know by commenting!
