Diaper recycling proposal pitched

Nanaimo company seeks provincial help and money to establish a system to divert soiled diapers from the Island’s landfills. Initial figures suggest that the cost of recycling used disposable diapers would be $50 to $75 per year for a client with a single infant.

A Vancouver Island company wants the province’s help in keeping dirty diapers out of local landfills.

WasteNOT, a small Nanaimo-based company, recently completed a survey of both Nanaimo and Victoria in the hope of establishing a business case for recycling disposable diapers.

“What we’re seeing now is a very strong trend,” said Michelle Bigg, WasteNOT’s executive director.

For the most part, survey participants were interested in a diaper recycling service because of its potential to reduce waste going to landfills, she said.
